The Story Behind the Song
This piece first came to life in 2009 as part of my very first album. Back then, it was called Vibrations.
At the time, I was reflecting on the opening verses of Genesis, where the Bible says:
"And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
— Genesis 1:2
I remember reading about the word "moved", and how the Spirit of God hovered over the waters before creation fully came into being. I read somewhere, the word hovered was like a vibration movement over the waters before God spoke and said, "Let there be light."
Whenever I played this piece on the piano, the music carried me away to a different place. I would play the full piece with my eyes closed and felt myself drifting away. It felt as if I was transported with Jesus into vast galaxies, as though He was taking me through the heavens, showing me the stars and the wonder of His creation, like He wanted me to see how amazing it was.
It was always such an incredible, joyful, and peaceful experience. There was no talking, but I would have a smile on my face, and even though I could not truly make out Jesus' face, I knew He too had a smile on His face. He would point to things and places, and our heads would turn to one another, and our eyes met and we smiled.
Sadly, I can no longer play the piece, but it has now found new life as a song, and the meaning has shifted for me as well.
Where it once felt like a journey through creation with Jesus, it now feels like a prayer over my own heart.
The scripture has become very personal:
"Let there be light."
— Genesis 1:3
There are places in my heart where I need the light of God. Places that need healing. Places that need life again. Places where the ground has become hard and needs to be broken up so that something new can grow.
And so, as I listen to this piece now, I feel like opening my chest, exposing my heart and pleading:
God, take my heart in Your hands and speak light over the darkness and deep places of my heart.
Spirit of God, over the waters, over the deep, let there be Light.
Breathe upon the silence, move upon the deep, breathe upon my being, make my heart anew.
Shine Your light on the things that need healing.
Shine Your light on the ground that has become hard.
Bring life where life is needed.
Restore what needs to be restored.
Let there be Light. Let there be Life!

My prayer is that as you listen, this song will become a quiet place of surrender for you too.
May the Spirit of God move gently over the deep places of your heart.
May His light shine into every place that needs hope, healing, and life.
And may the One who said, "Let there be light," speak those words over you again.

In the beginning, the earth was formless and void, and darkness covered the deep. The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, and then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Light was the first creative act of God. Before the sun, moon and stars, there was light. It came by His Word, and it immediately changed the atmosphere. Darkness had to yield.
Throughout Scripture, light represents God’s presence, truth, holiness and life. It reveals, gives direction, exposes what is hidden and brings hope where there is none.
Jesus declared that He is the Light of the world.
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
JOHN 8:12 (NKJV)
His light still shines today. It shines into our hearts, our circumstances, and the dark places in our lives. No darkness can overcome it.
Paul encourages us to live as children of light:
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”
EPHESIANS 5:8 (NKJV)
We are invited to let His light rise in us, through us, and into the places around us.

- Where do I need God’s light to shine in my life right now?
- Are there areas of darkness or confusion that I need to bring to Him?
- How can I walk more fully as a child of light this week?
A Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the Light of the world.
Shine into my heart, my mind and every place of darkness. Bring Your truth, Your hope and Your life. Teach me to walk as a child of light and to let Your light shine through me.
