The Story Behind the Song
He Is – The Great I Am was written as a declaration of who Jesus is.
As I spent time in Scripture, the Lord kept bringing me to the names and titles of Jesus – the One who was, who is, and who is to come. From Genesis to Revelation, we see a consistent picture: the unchanging God who is faithful in every season.
This song flowed out of a deep awe and gratitude for His character – that He is not only the Creator and King, but also the One who draws near to us. He is both glorious and intimate, holy and compassionate, sovereign and kind.
In a world that is constantly changing, His names remind us that we can stand on unshakable truth. He is the Great I Am – and in Him we find our hope, our identity, and our place of rest.

The Great I Am in Scripture
When Moses encountered God at the burning bush, he asked for His name. God replied:
“I AM WHO I AM.”
EXODUS 3:14 (NKJV)
The name “I AM” speaks of God’s eternal existence. He has always been, He is now, and He always will be. He is self-existent, not dependent on anything or anyone. He is the source of all life, all truth, and all purpose.
Throughout the Old and New Testaments, Jesus revealed Himself through many names – each one showing a different aspect of His character: Provider, Shepherd, Redeemer, Saviour, Lord, King and Friend.
In Revelation, Jesus declares:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”
REVELATION 22:13 (NKJV)
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).
The writer to the Hebrews reminds us:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
HEBREWS 13:8 (NKJV)
No matter what we face, we can trust the unchanging One. He is the Great I Am – faithful in the past, present and future.

- Which name or title of Jesus speaks most to me today, and why?
- Where do I need to be reminded that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever?
- How can I live with greater trust in His unchanging character this week?

Lord Jesus, You are the Great I Am.
The beginning and the end.
Thank You that You are faithful,
unchanging and always near.
Help me to trust Your name each day,
and to rest in who You are.
